Integrated Psychotherapy

Issues I Work With How I Work Beliefs & Biases

Since you're here, reading this page on psychotherapy, I'm going to assume you've got something going on that you'd like some help with and you think therapy might be the answer. Let me tell you a bit about how I work, and if, after reading this, you think we might be a good fit then you can call to set up a free consultation. You can also find out more about me by reading some of the other pages on this site.

The most important aspect of therapy is the therapeutic relationship. Psychotherapy researchers attribute about 70% of client change (versus techniques that therapists use) to the relationship that develops between the client and the therapist. While I do think it is incredibly important to have both skills and wisdom, if there's no connection between therapist and client, in my opinion, there's no therapy going on. Our wounding happens in relationship and it can only be healed in relationship. What this means is that our relationship will be an authentic one and I will come to care for you.

My clients would likely describe me as warm, caring, compassionate, accepting, wise, and professional, but relatively casual. I understand that doing therapeutic work requires courage and vulnerability. I honor my clients' vulnerability by matching it with my transparency. This doesn't mean I'll tell you all the details of my life, but if something in my life has relevance to your process, I won't hold it back. I think therapy works best when the client and therapist work as a team, rather than the therapist assuming they have all the wisdom and know every answer to their client's questions. I believe that you are the expert on your life. My job is to help the expert in you come to the forefront.

On the other hand, there may be times when you'll need a little prod, or a bit of a reality check. My commitment is to provide that. I don't believe that therapy is a passive process for either the client or the therapist. I won't sit back and repeat lines like "uh 'huh", and "tell me how you feel about that". I will, however, help you to deepen into your own experience so that you may gain insight and resolution.

I use my clinical judgment and wisdom to select appropriate therapeutic interventions and models to help you deepen your self-understanding, work through unresolved issues and trauma, and create positive changes in how you feel, live, and experience relationships. Something to ponder

The thought manifests as the word.
The word manifests as the deed.
The deed develops into habit.
Habit hardens into character.
So watch the thought and its ways with care
And let it spring out of love
Born out of concern for all beings.
As the shadow follows the body,
As we think so we become
